Throughout 2021, I worked on a year long remote residency with performance ensemble The Hinterlands for John Michael Kohler Arts Center. The project, called Recipe Box, Memory Box, was community based in Sheboygan, WI and centered around recipes, food and memory. Held in three phases, the first phase we asked the community for their recipes through a phone hotline, postcards, flyers and online promotion. Folks were also able to schedule 1:1 phone calls with us to create a recipe of their choice together.
In the second phase, we visited Sheboygan, WI and did a series of tailgating for everyday moments (trash pickup, sub-council meeting and shift change/lunch at the local factories). We also did an event called Take Out Take Down, where we order the same dishes from two similar restaurants and livestream the event as a friendly game like way to showcase local businesses. The community made trophies for them as well (everybody wins of course).
In the final phase we developed an online performance to be viewed at folks leisure, which can be viewed here. We made a care kit accessible to people living in Sheboygan that included contents to enjoy the performance with a recipe book I designed that features all of the recipes and experiences we had through the course of the project. That book is also available to purchase here.
